Amazon.com Product Description
Amazon.com Product Description Aiming to make a mark as one of the market's most powerful and sophisticated portable media players, Toshiba's Gigabeat MES60VK doesn't disappoint. The device employs Microsoft's intuitive Portable Media Center (PMC) software to play your favorite digital movies, music, and photos,

with support for WMA Lossless, WMA, MP3, WAV, WMV, and JPEG formats. The Windows Media Player application even transcodes MPEG-4, AVI, and MOV formats, making it far more versatile than most video-compatible players. Meanwhile, the MES60VK's 60 GB hard drive is capable of holding a ton of digital media, including about 15,000 songs (more than 1,000 complete albums) at 128 kbps, a mind-boggling 30,000 songs at 64 kbps, and a still-impressive 1,700 songs, or 114 hours, of CD-resolution WAV files.

The PC-only device is also PlaysForSure-certified by Microsoft, which means that it will operate with any similarly designated management software or download service, such as Napster, Rhapsody, and Wal-Mart Music Downloads. Users can also subscribe to movies or TV shows via MTV/Microsoft's Urge, TiVo to Go, Starz Vongo, and a host of other sites. And because the MES60VK is automatically recognized by Windows Media Player 10, you won't need to install drivers of any kind.

Controlling the device couldn't be easier. View larger.
The MES60VK's defining feature, however, is its 2.4-inch QVGA display, which offers a resolution of 320 x 240 (65,000 colors) to ensure elite video and picture quality. Viewers who want to enjoy optimal resolution can switch to landscape mode, or they can output the signal to a full-size TV for group viewing. And serious music fans can download and view album covers on the screen, search for their favorite tracks by scrolling through the album covers, or even set a favorite album as a background image.

The device is prepared for future developments as well, as it's one of the first media players that can be connected to and controlled via the Xbox 360's interface. Finally, the MES60VK serves as a USB host, letting you connect a digital camera to the unit's USB port and then transfer and view the pics immediately--no PC required.

Additional features include a built-in FM tuner with 30 station presets, a docking cradle for charging, and a pair of headphones with an integrated remote control. The MES60VK, which offers roughly 20 hours of music playback per charge, measures a compact 2.38 by 3.94 by 0.62 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a one-year warranty on parts and labor.

What's in the Box
MES60VK portable media player, AC adapter, AC adapter cable, earbuds, USB cable, USB conversion cable, AV cable, software CD-ROM, and quick start guide.

Summary: Way ahead of it's time. 2009-05-29
Comment: The Gigabeat's slick design and beautiful display are what first attracted me to purchase this device. I have had it for two and a half years and it is still working like a charm. Granted I do not use it as much as my other audio devices. Sound playback is accurate except for a minor static sound right before each new song. Video playback on the gigabeat's screen is truly jaw dropping. Problems: battery life is non existent. After the first month the battery just would not stay for more than two hours. As for media for the device it is hard to find anything to buy, and conversion software is few and far between. The good thing about this device though is I can still use it as an external hard drive!

Summary: Great player, for tech geeks who are comfortable with a screwdriver 2008-12-21
Comment: I purchased this player off eBay a few days back (as it's no longer sold - Toshiba basically replaced it with the Zune). I will not review the original firmware, as I wiped it immediately and replaced it with Rockbox (www.rockbox.org). The Rockbox firmware is not complete yet, but it is functional.

I have used Rockbox with the Gigabeat F series, but this S series is a major improvement. The S series is small (smaller than an iPod Video), light, and has a nice screen and excellent controls.

As for hardware mods, it's very easy to open (5 screws). The hard drive is a standard 1.8 inch ZIF based 8mm size, and I added a 120GB drive to expand the storage. Removing he battery requires removing 2 more screws, but it can be done. Being 700mah, I suspect upgrading to a 1000mah will give me an improvement in battery life, but I haven't done that yet.

As for the sound - that's been the only drawback for me (updating this review, because of this). The sound quality is sub-par, to my ears. Comparing it with the Sansa Clip, Cowon D2 and the Zune 30, this player comes in dead last in SQ.

So, if you are a tech geek who uses Rockbox and wants a good player (sans the sound quality) that supports it, look no further!
