Product Review
Brimming with high-tech features, Toshiba's massive, 56-inch 56H80 widescreen projection TV is ready to rock your world, handling inputs from components as diverse as DVD players, digital TV set-top boxes, digital satellite systems, cable television boxes, camcorders--you name it.
A 3D Y/C (4 MB, 10-bit) digital comb filter with Vertical Contour Correction provides more accurate processing of RF and composite-video signals for a sharper, cleaner picture. This advanced comb filter significantly reduces detail noise, seen as shimmering or flicker, in complex or intricately detailed scenes.
The set uses Toshiba's digital chassis design with proprietary I.D.S.C. (Intelligent Digital Scan Conversion) technology. I.D.S.C. automatically converts DTV signals routed through a ColorStream HD input for maximum display quality with no user configuration or set-up required. I.D.S.C. (in conjunction with the 3D Y/C digital comb filter) automatically converts 480i signals into 480p signals by using a combination of vertical line doubling, frame doubling, and horizontal pixel doubling to achieve the highest possible resolution without motion artifacts.
A PowerFocus HD lens system uses wider diameter lenses than conventional projection-TV lens systems, part of a unique 6-element configuration. PowerFocus HD lens systems are 65 percent sharper than standard lens systems, giving you greater clarity, brightness, and color accuracy. Similarly, high-performance PowerFocus HD Cathode Ray Tubes (CRTs) incorporate larger electrostatic lenses and higher beam current for reduced beam spot size and more accurate beam shape. The result is a 10 percent increase in brightness and a 25 percent increase in sharpness over conventional tubes.
Built-in TheaterShield Plus protection builds on Toshiba's hard-coat TheaterShield technology by adding an anti-reflective layer for increased contrast and reduced glare, with no reduction in brightness.
Two sets of ColorStream HD component-video inputs provide the optimum way to connect a digital playback source to a display device. ColorStream HD inputs let you enjoy true 480p resolution from DVD-Video discs (using a progressive scan DVD player) or 1080i from an HDTV set-top box.
For audio, the 56H80 offers SRS TruSurround, which creates a wide, 3-dimensional sound field from the television's 2 internal speakers. The set pumps 14 watts per channel (28 watts total power), employing StableSound to maintain television volume within a preset range regardless of the source signal. Toshiba's Sub Bass System (SBS) boosts your programs' low end audio for heightened dramatic impact.
An illuminated universal remote controls most manufacturers' VCRs, DVD players, and other home-entertainment components.
What's in the Box TV, remote control, remote batteries, and a user's manual.

Toshiba 56H80, May 30, 2001

This review is from: Toshiba 56H80 56-Inch HDTV-Ready Projection TV (Electronics)
The Toshiba 56H80 is a widescreen projection TV that is "HDTV-compatible": it claims 1600 lines of resolution, and can display native 1080i.Positives: the image sharpness is exceptional. The built-in scan converter substantially improves the look of DVDs and broadcast TV by line doubling, dot doubling, and video noise reduction. This TV has lots of inputs, including 2 colorstream component video (senses either interlaced or progressive scan DVD players), 2 S-VHS inputs, and 2 composite video. This unit has two-tuners for side-by-side pictures, and a surfing mode that displays an array of still images grabbed from multiple channels. Standard 4:3 TV images are shown on the wide screen in several formats, such as full height with grey sidebars, or full width with cropping of the top and bottom, or full height and width by distorting the image.Negatives: channel switching is slow. The universal remote is powerful but somewhat awkward (for instance, there are buttons to...Read more

This review is from: Toshiba 56H80 56-Inch HDTV-Ready Projection TV (Electronics)
I've owned the 56H80 for about 6 months. I am now addicted to wide screen :)Pros: - SUPERB picture with DVD's and HDTV signals, absolutely stunning. - Lack of scan lines is wonderful - Good connection pack on the back - Easy User controls - Good multi control remote (controls DVD, stereo, VCR, DirecTV etc.) - Once adjusted it has excellent color and clarity on DVD or HDTV.Cons: - several times the TV has made a loud POP, the picture disappeared and sound too. It does come back on immediately but needed to be readjusted again. - DirecTV signal looks HORRIBLE on this TV, you can see crawling around every sharp contrasted edge (even with SVM disconnected). My understanding after reading many other reviewers is this is common with HDTV's not just Toshiba. Consistent consensus is this is due to the signal compression from the DTV source or cable company source. I will, however, be trying Dish Network and different cables soon. - switching Inputs via remote is done by repeatedly...Read more

Toshiba 56H80 - update, July 25, 2001

This review is from: Toshiba 56H80 56-Inch HDTV-Ready Projection TV (Electronics)
This is a brief update to my previous review of the Toshiba 56H80 HDTV.In my previous review I mentioned that the TV broke after 1 week, and 3 months later, the service folks still hadn't been able to obtain the needed repair parts from Toshiba. At 4 months the repaired TV was returned to me in perfect working condition. At 5 months it continues to work perfectly.I continue to recommend this TV over its competitors because of the exceptional picture quality. If you do a side-by-side comparison of HDTVs, one thing to look for is noise in solid-color backgrounds. On Sony WEGAs, I see millions of tiny dots randomly moving around like insects. The Toshiba 56H80 has circuitry that eliminates this visual defect. (The video noise suppression can be disabled for ultimate sharpness from noise-free digital sources.)
