I decided to upgrade from the CX300's, which I had about a year or so because I felt like treating myself. I also have the Shure E3c's. The Shure sound better but are a hassle to use because of the perfect fit you need to get with the earphones and your ears in order to get any bass. I use the Shure for airplane flights or whenever I know I will be uninterrupted as I don't want to go through the resealing process once I've got the right fit.
The CX500's seat easily and have better sound than the CX300's. They are my earphone of choice when I know my music listening is going to be frequently interrupted (e.g. at work, at the dog park, out walking my dog etc.). If cost is a serious concern I would recommend the CX300's as a significant upgrade over the basic earphones that come with mp3 players. Otherwise I find the CX500's to be a good alternative to the lower end of the Shure line.
