Product Review

No, it's not as big as a real movie screen--but it will probably feel like it. Samsung's rear-projection HCN653W offers a massive, 65-inch display in a widescreen format that's specially configured to accommodate the native aspect ratios of favorite movies. The set's dark-bezel, silver-gray cabinet makes it a great choice for stylish, big-screen entertainment in large rooms. And, when you're ready to take on the world of high-definition television, just add a HD satellite/off-air receiver or an HDTV tuner to enjoy full-quality digital HDTV broadcast programming--the set features a DVI-HDTV interface so you can establish a direct, premium-quality digital connection with a DTV receiver.

Whether your passion is for DVDs, sports, or movies, the HCN653W delivers high performance and convenience. At the heart of the set, three high-resolution seven-inch liquid-cooled CRTs power Samsung's RealFlect HD Fine Focus system, delivering highly focused illumination across the entire screen. PerfectFocus digital auto-convergence gives you convenient picture focus at the push of a button. Samsung's Cinema Progressive Scan automatically upconverts all non-digital signals to a smooth, clear 720 lines of progressively scanned images.

An important element of Cinema Progressive Scan is 3:2 pulldown detection, which renders DVD movies in their native 24-frame format. Digital video mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture.

Samsung's HD Fine Pitch screen further improves picture clarity, especially when viewing higher-definition video sources like DVD and HDTV. The fine-pitch, .52 mm screen brings out subtle image details otherwise unnoticeable on standard .72 mm pitch screens. Samsung's Auto PerfectFocus auto-convergence system corrects picture focus at the push of a button. All onscreen information and menus appear in translucent overlays, letting you view video programs in the background while you consult the setup menus.

A total of 11 video inputs handles more than most of the sets out there and includes the DVI input mentioned above, three each composite-video and high-definition component-video inputs, two S-video inputs, and two standard RF inputs (for VCRs and cable boxes).

The set's two-tuner picture-in-picture with stock-ticker modes lets you monitor up to 13 different channels simultaneously. Stock-ticker mode places the lower one fifth of the screen of one channel into another channel so you can view streaming text beneath the program of your choice.

The 15-watt-per-channel stereo audio system benefits from BBE Sound with a five-band equalizer, which is designed to enhance the sound from movies and music programs alike. Sound Mode Preset gives you the best dynamic sound settings for whatever you're watching. Choose from standard, music, movie, speech, or custom.

A hinged door at the base of the set's component shelf permits placement of two full-sized components (e.g. a DVD player and an HDTV tuner). The door uses a tinted window for passing remote-control signals, and openings in the back of the cabinet accommodate simple connection of cables and power cords.

What's in the Box

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT TELEVISION FOR THE MONEY, December 12, 2003

I have this TV paired up to a Samsung HD-953 DVI DVD player and the picture is terrific. This television is a beast, so make sure you do your measurements. It's a piece of furniture in its' own right. The set up is easy, and there are many, many useful inputs on the back. USE the DVI and you will achieve an excellent picture. This is a digital HDTV television, so the hardware interfaces much more positively with a digital input. I had one bit of trouble with the door on the bottom of the cabinet, and Samsung sent me the WHOLE door. I've had terrific experiences with their products in general. You cannot buy more television for this price.

With this tv you can have top of the line performance with out the top of the line price. I have had mine for a few months now, and I would recommend it to anyone. The ONLY reason I gave this tv 4 stars is because of the component inputs. It has 3, but 2 of them are dedicated to High Definition. Meaning ONLY high definition components can be used. (like HD satellite) DVD players are NOT High Definition! So really it is like only having 1 component input. Kind of a pain when I have my Playstation 2 hooked up using components. (recommended) Now there is no place for any dvd player. That is why I got Samsung's HD931. It has a DVI output that will go right into the DVI input in the back of my tv. (see what I mean about top of the line!)
The tv is simply great. I highly recommend getting satellite service, and the Samsung HD931 to take advantage of what this tv can do.
Good luck!

DO NOT BUY THIS TELEVISION. IT DOES NOT ALLOW YOU TO CHANGE THE SIZE OF THE PICTURE TO FIT THE SCREEN FOR BROADCAST DIGITA CABLE (non-HDTV) SOURCES. And here is the real horror: if those bars burn in (Samsung recommends that you do not view non-screen filling material more than 15% of the time), your warranty is void! You only find this out AFTER you try to change the screen size and read the manual. I REPEAT, DO NOT BUY THIS TELEVISION! I am stuck with this TV; you should not have to be :(
