Summary: tough little player 2008-07-12
Comment: I worked in the accounting department for this company, but they laid off all of the rio people in the bay area offices so this review is unbiased. I recieved a few rios over the years to take home and play with and fill out a review form and I was not satisfied because they would not work with my computer and they did not have enough memory to make the effort worth it. Then I got this one when the forge first came out. I had no interest in it because I had bad experiences with the older models so I gave it to my computer engineer dad and he had audiobooks downloaded in the blink of an eye. He gave it back to me when I started talking about getting an ipod. Now I am glad that I did not get an ipod because unlike the shuffle this has a display and is compatable with the audiobooks that I download for free from the digital library. I use it while in the car using a cassett tape adapter, and while working out and doing chores around the house. It is a tough little player I wear it while I ride horses and around the barn and it still works after quite a few years.
I do have a list of improvments.
I would like it to have a rechargable battery (although my dad likes it the way it is because you can just bring spare batteries. It is not always possible to recharge abroad or wait for it to recharge when it is dead.)
I want more space for more audiobooks and music
the clip is useless and needs to be redesigned (I wear mine tucked into the strap of my sports bra this works great but I wish I could clip it on.)
A little speaker built into the nice and sturdy carry case would be handy.
I wish the headphones fit small ears better.
overall it is a nice player and I no longer want an ipod and it is even better because I got it for free.

Summary: lots of problems, poor customer support 2008-04-25
Comment: Ive had this player for just over two weeks. Adding an extra 512MB SD external card. I downloaded my music relatively very easy, only to get a message that there is insufficient internal memory to create index. Out of the 512MB I am only using 460MB of internal memory. Does it really require more than 52MB to create one? thats 10% of capacity...the unit seems sturdy enough as advertised, its software easy to use, but the Customer Support site is a joke.

Summary: So sad, quality bad 2008-01-06
Comment: Can I give this no stars? I ignored the negative reviews and bought a Rio because it was compatible with downloads from my library's on line audio book site. When it did work it was great in every feature. When it didn't, customer support was non-existent and repair was expensive. After three refurbishings I give up. Don't waste your money.

Summary: Perfect Player for Almost Two Years 2007-02-20
Comment: An excellent player with no problems for almost two years now. The only problem is the FM tuner, it is not working well but this doesn't bother me at all. It is very good player and comes with arm band for fixing while doing sports.

Summary: Finally, a great player for Audiobooks! 2007-01-14
Comment: I was really nervous about purchasing the Rio. It's gotten such mixed reviews on this site and others. But, it was the only player I could find on the market that did everything I needed. And, after a few months, I have to say, I am very pleased with my purchase. I now believe that most of the unfavorable reviews are from older models and Rio has recently gotten the kinks out.
I used this player for audiobook/podcast exclusively. I have never loaded music on it.
I needed a player that was:
1. Expandable (I have a separate device that allows me to schedule recordings and save them to an SD card, I needed a player to put the cards into)
2. FM Radio with record feature
3. Autoresume (I bought this player to replace my RCA Lyra which lacks the autoresume feature; a player is useless for audiobooks without this feature).
4. Audible.com compatable
5. PlaysforSure/WMA compatable (I download audiobooks from my local libraries onto the player).
I am very pleased with my purchase. This player is one of very few that was made with the audiobook lover in mind. Not only does it do autoresume, you can save your place on up to 9 different tracks! I have only found 1 other MP3 player manufacturer that offers this feature. My only complaint is that the SD card slot in a bad place (behind the battery). So, I don't switch cards as much as I expected to. However, I was pleased to find that the player accepts my 2gb SD card. The 4gb card didn't work, but I think that may be a problem with the card.
