I bought this for use on the office phone system at work, to play our "Music On Hold" CD. It does the job. The MODE button cycles through options, including one to repeat the whole disc. Put it on that and it will run indefinitely (several days now), as long as it has power. Our phone system has a UPS, so unless we have an extended outage, it should be good.
The battery compartment door is under the CD cover. It has a power line-in jack and will run without batteries. It requires a 4.5 volt DC supply capable of providing 450 milliamps. Radio Shack P/N 273-353 (4.5 VDC, 700 mA) supply with P/N 273-335 adapter plug (type "B") did the trick.
The controls are straight-forward. They're labeled using etching in the plastic, with no ink (i.e., black-on-black), so the labels are somewhat hard to read, but in good light they're fine. The volume control is +/- buttons, not a dial.
I had no problem with the OPEN switch. It's a mechanical slide switch...Read more

This is my second Phillips EXP2546 (not bought through amazon) and both have not outlasted the batteries before they died, would play for any where from 10 seconds to 4 minutes then turn itself off. Total junk. DO NOT BUY.

Hard to open, bad display, short battery life, don't bother,

I can't believe the other review. We must be talking about other than the Philips EXP2546 because this is not sleek, but clunky. It is very hard to open and close (the release button is hard to get a hold of). The battery life is less than 7 hours. The display is unreadable. The earbuds' wire was so short that if I turned or nodded my head it would disconnect. I returned the item and cannot recommend it at all.
