Summary: Middle-of-the-road 2008-05-24
Comment: This little device has a lot going for it. It has lots of space, has many features, and is very low-cost.
It is very easy to use. Simply plug it into a USB port, and as long as you're using 98SE or later, Windows detects it as a removable drive. Just drop your MP3s into the drive and you're done. It also supports folders and nested folders, so you can drop albums in and have them categorized by music type.
It has an FM radio, which works quite well. My son's different MP3 player also has a radio, but it picks up its own interference more than it picks up radio stations! That is NOT the case here. It receives signals fine with no interference and has 30 presets.
The device also has a recorder function. Not only does the machine record voices with its built-in mic, it can also record directly from the radio--a unique feature. All sound recordings are saved as WAV files. Unfortunately, I found the recording quality when using the voice record function to be very poor. Although you can hear what's being said, the sound is muffled and indistinct.
In fact, the sound quality in general is below average. Although there is an equalizer--Jazz setting sounds best--the music sounds flat and canny. Also, the equalizer setting does not work with the radio, only MP3 playback.
So overall, this is strictly a middle-of-the-road device. Certainly don't buy it for use as a sound recorder. But for the price, if you want something you can use in a high-risk application like biking or motorcycling, or something you can take to school without worrying too much if it gets stolen, you can hardly go wrong here.
