Summary: Memorex mmp9008 Looks good, but its a deception. 2010-04-09
Comment: I was sent the memorex mmp9008 as a christmas gift. 6 weeks later it glitched out, powering up and shutting down, buttons responding and not responding. It was working one minute and pshyco the next. I called memorex, the tech support was okay. There was a form to fill out, mass emailer response, and after using the tech support number on the memorex site at each stage (representative interpretations of the email responses were needed. They make IRS directions look straight forward) i managed to get through the process and received a replacement player about 6 weeks later =( and I missed listening to my lending library wma books very much while i waited. I suited my replacement unit up in a neoprene case and attached all the safety cords and got back to listening to my books. For two days now it just turns off unexpectedly. Tonight (first week of april) it won't even play for two minutes straight, and after hitting the reset button a few times I now get symbols rather than words and the charge screen instead of the menu ???? I feel bad because I don't want to hurt my sweetie's feelings and I know he picked this one in particular because it had the wma capacity required by the license laws binding the books I like to listen too. My frustration at having my books locked up on this thing are pretty high as well. I get three down loads; I put one on my device, one at home and one on work computer. I would like to try reformatting it, but then I will lose the book Ive waited weeks for that are locked up in this thing. Which brings me to my last real complaint about the functionality of this device, and other than the apparent bad wiring these seem to suffer from it is this: When I try to delete a book that I am done listening to I get a message that says the device is not responding, or has been disconnected. However, when I am using the device stand alone it does not show the folder that is apparent when I am managing my files via the pc and those file show 0 kb of space being used. When I called support to ask how to get these dead folders out of my data base he said to reformat the device. Wow.

Last but not least, the sound is dim. if you turn it up or use better head phones the battery drains very quickly.

I feel like I should return it AGAIN and ask for THE one they built right, I feel like my sweety got robbed.. .. .. but Im sure its time to mark it down as a wasted entertainment investment and move on.

Summary: By far the worst MP3 player I've owned 2010-01-25
Comment: This is hands-down the worst Mp3 player I've ever owned. While in the store (Target) I found it on clearance and really liked the idea of expandable memory. I bought mine in early October and at first it seemed alright at best. I still haven't figured out where the shuffle option is (there isn't one) and there isn't an option for continuous play. Which means if you're like me, and you use it while riding a motorcycle, once your playlist ends, it won't automatically start over again so you ride in silence until you find somewhere to pull over and hit "play" again. While the hum of the bike is soothing in and of itself, it is a major inconvenience just to have your tunes die unexpectedly. I found that in order to "shuffle" my tracks, I had to edit the titles and number them - again, a major inconvenience.

But wait there's more: Suddenly the Mp3 player display stopped working. The 'power' switch refused to turn the player off and I was stuck waiting with the player perpetually 'on' which is draining to the battery, of course. I couldn't do anything with it, and now it is officially useless. The battery is fully charged and at best when you turn it on the display flickers before losing life again altogether.

I can't complain about the cover or the casing. I usually keep mine in my pocket so it didn't get too scratched and I even thought it was kinda cool looking. The sound quality definitely sucks though.

Summary: Very satisfied! 2010-01-15
Comment: I bought this unit refurbished for 50 dollars and it's worked perfectly. The on/off battery is a little hard to use but otherwise, it's worked well. I bought it with the idea of using it to watch videos on it and occasionally songs. I've put 4 movies and 4 albums and it's at less than half capacity. It plays the videos clearly though not in widescreen. The battery last about 2 hours watching videos. The audio sounds good to me but I'm not that picky. There are probably better players out there, but for the price I'm satisfied and would buy it again!

Summary: A little annoying but seems to work 2010-01-01
Comment: I got this for a bargain price of $38, and so therefore wasn't expecting much. I usually list the good/bad for an item so here goes:

Can't be used when recharging.

Automatically dims and turns off the LCD display when playing long videos. doesn't have a "keep on" function I've found so far.

Scratches very easy.

Requires syncing with Windows Media Player to have files work. You can copy them directly onto it but then you get a license error message.

Buttons are a little strange, I don't think it's a matter of pushing them hard enough as it is waiting for it to respond.

Battery is built in and non-removable without taking it apart.

My biggest gripe is you have to transcode any sort of video file to get it to work, which took me a few steps to figure out. The software enclosed with it is not very impressive but works.

Flat sound, strong mid-range but no bass to speak of.

Aside from that it's a generic audio/video player. I haven't given it the official wring out and don't plan to. It's fragile and doesn't look like it would stand up to being tossed around in a pocket or run for hours and hours on end.

If it dies on me in a short time I'll update my review, but so far it looks like a serviceable but not stellar product.

********************************************

Be wary if trying to update the firmware on this thing. I followed the instructions on holding the power switch "on" when plugging in the USB cable and it locked itself into I guess a maintenance mode. For all appearances it was dead and wouldn't turn on, but would still recognize as a "failed device" when hooked up to the computer. Only several hours later then the battery was nearly depleted did I get it to restart. Needless to say I'm leaving it alone.
