Summary: Dies after 20 minutes 2008-11-11
Comment: The Zen Stone worked fine for the first two weeks. But then it started turning off after about 20 minutes of use. It could not be restarted immediately. I returned it to the store and got another. But the new one did the exact same thing on its first day of use. I think it may have to do with being out in the cold. When it worked for the first two weeks, temperatures were still in the 50's or above. The problem seems to occur when temperatures are below around 45 degrees. I would not recommend it if you plan to use it outside in cold weather.

Comment: However after a year the connection to my headphones got really weird. Like it would only play out of one ear, I tried changing headphones and it seemed to work for a while and then it just went back to only playing one speaker. Definitely sad, but overall I really loved it, until now.

Summary: DON'T BUY CREATIVE! 2008-10-31
Comment: The first mp3 player I bought was by Sony and it has worked pretty well, but since I didn't care for the design or the menu, I thought I'd buy a different brand this time around. The Stone really appealed because of its price, looks, and features. So I spent a lot of time reading reviews and despite the number of people that said theirs randomly stopped working, I still ending up ordering a Stone because of the price.
WHAT A MISTAKE! I started using the Stone right away and everything was going well. I laughed at myself for worrying. THE VERY NEXT DAY, my FULLY CHARGED Stone WOULD NOT TURN ON! I couldn't use the recovery tool that I downloaded from Creative either because when I connected the Stone, it wouldn't show up on the computer. MY STONE WAS DEAD WITHIN TWO DAYS OF USE!
So, there goes fifty bucks. (I bought the 2GB plus with speaker.)
Other reasons not to buy the Stone:
It is ridiculously hard to turn on and off and you have to press for way too long. The middle button isn't big enough or something. Whenever I try to turn it off, I end up turning up the volume super loud instead.
When you reach the end of a list, it doesn't go back up to the first one.
You can't choose individual songs in a folder.
Changing the mode it's playing (in one folder, on repeat, shuffle, etc.) takes way too long. I have to press the middle button, right towards options, down to play mode, and then up and down.
You can't browse music and listen to music at the same time. So let's say I want to go from my Carnival Ride folder to my Some Hearts folder. Well, as soon as I switch over to Some Hearts, Flat On the Floor is cut off because Wasted interrupts it and starts playing.
The clock doesn't work. When you connect the stone to your computer, it asks if you want to sync the time to your computer time and I said yes. Like an hour later, I checked the clock on the Stone and it reset. O_o Before my Stone died, I had synced it twice and both times this happened.
I think I've made my point. THE STONE IS A BAD BUY! So don't buy it.

Summary: I re-found my love for an old portable cassette player... 2008-10-31
Comment: You know, I'm one of those people that just really DON'T like change. I pretty much still live in the 1970's - platform shoes, bell-bottoms, 8-tracks, records, reel-to-reels, and, yes even still cassettes. Well, late last year, my husband had gotten me 1 of these {black} Zen Stones (1GB) for my birthday, mainly because I begged him for one. He did. I always said I'd NEVER either want, or own one. But, these Zen's were just too cute!!! I enjoyed it for a while...a very BRIEF while. About 5 months was about how long it lasted. I'm sooo very serious!!! About 2nd month into having it, well that's where the problems started surfacing. First, jumping songs w/out me even doing anything. It would have a tendency to come on all by itself, and of course I would realize until too late, so sometimes when I wanted to listen to it, I couldn't, because the battery was low. Somehow, one time when I plugged it into the computer to change some songs around, 200 MB's were {forever} gone - went from a 1 GB, down to 800 MB - and, I don't understand what'd happened??? Let's see, it wouldn't charge all that good on a wall-charger - and, held even {LESS} battery life than charging it on the computer. Last straw - one day taking it off the wall charger, it just stopped working. The green light showed on, but it wouldn't play my songs. So, I plugged it into the computer, to maybe see what might be wrong w/it. It wouldn't even read my player. I tried to play it 1 more time. Still nothing. After months of very frustrating, and futile aggrevation, I just tossed it in the garbage. Last time I ever try to {upgrade} anything. I found my husband's old classic Sony basic tape player, bought some cheap/generic Doller Tree blank cassettes, got out my LP's and 45's - had a blast recording them. I'm happy!!!!!

Summary: Worked great for awhile 2008-09-22
Comment: I was using the Stone for listening to audio books as I exercised. After about 2 months the Stone started to "lose" my place so I spent the first few minutes of my walk finding it again. I solved the problem by having only one book on the Stone at a time. The next thing was the Stone stopped being recognized by my computer. At first I blamed it on Vista but have tried my other computer with XP and still no connection. I cannot even charge the Stone from a wall charger.
I am replacing it this week with another brand.
