Summary: Simply Amazing 2006-08-05
Comment: Owned this player for about six months and it hasn't failed me yet. The battery life is outstanding, and I've been able to run mine for three days of very heavy use (several hours a day of music playback) without recharging. On average use of an hour or so a day it might last me a week or two, which is something that apple cannot say about its 5Gen iPod.
As for compatibility, I've put .mp3, .wma, and other music files on this without a problem. If you buy all of your music through iTunes, this might be a problem because it is not compatible with iTunes... but you can get around it by burning all of your iTunes songs to CD and ripping them to .mp3 format. Use all of your ripped CDs from your collection, or even pirated songs (shame on you) without having to deal with iTunes or any software bent on charging you more money around every corner.
The software allows you to rip CDs right onto your player, or drag and drop music, video, or files right into the player in an organized fashion. The player accepts .avi format movies, so any files you have in .avi it will convert to the size compatible with your player. I have been able to put movies, TV episodes, etc. that I have downloaded on various locations online. No iTunes, no buying movies, it'll take what you have on-hand.
As for other features, this thing has FM Radio, and even a microphone so you can dictate things to yourself (which I found quite entertaining). Both of which are easy to use. You can change player skins to one of several different preset background and menu colors, although the colors are not customizable yet. You can have a picture that you upload from your computer as your background as well, which I found to be a great feature.
Picture quality is SPARKLING. This thing has way more colors than the 5Gen iPod, giving you crisper, clearer images and video.
As for the UI, everything is easily accessable. The menu buttons and scrollpad are easy to use and fairly strait forward. Theres a play button, a back button (like the MENU button on iPods) a menu button which is basically like a right click I guess... and then a customizable shortcut button that you can set to anything you want. The only thing I can possibly complain about is when searching under "Artist" you can't look at all albums by the artist at the same time, but rather have to look through each individual album. Not a big problem, but sometimes I forget what album a song is on, more of my problem than the player's.
The player is a tad thicker than the iPod, but feels comfortable and sits well in your hand. It's 30 gigs... and I definitely haven't run out of room yet on it. This player is the best of the best in my opinion, and to everyone who doesn't want just another iPod and become their own trendsetter, get this. In my opinion, this player is many times better than the new iPods, and you can't go wrong with this sexy black :). I'd recommend buying a case or skin to prevent scratches though, all mp3 players scratch easilly.
