The Creative EP-660 earbuds are the latest mid-level offering from Creative. I have a pair of EP-830 that came with my Zen X-Fi mp3 player that I will use for comparison in this review. I was impressed with the sound quality of the 660's compared to the 830's which retail for $20 more. In listening tests that included rap (K'Naan), hard rock (Guns `N Roses), and blues (Beth Hart and Joe Bonamassa) I found little to distinguish one from the other as far as reproducing sound across the full spectrum. I don't think you can ask for much more in terms of sound quality at this price point.

However, there is a catch. I have a number of durability concerns for the 660's. First, I wish that Creative would start to design angled plugs rather than the straight ones that both the 660's and the 830's share. The straight plug makes strain and bending much more likely when using with an mp3...Read more

I bought these because the stock headphones that came with my Creative Zen had blown. I used those headphones for almost six years and every other pair that I bought (from chain places) seemed to severely lack any serious sound structure. I would continually have to turn my Zen almost all the way up to get any real sound out of them.

These little babies are phenomenal. They are very small and come with three sizes of rubber in-ear pieces that can be swapped out.

The first thing I noticed when I first used these was the superb way they cancel outside noises. I couldn't hear anything after I slapped these in, including my wife trying to talk to me from two feet away. I had to actually take them out to hear what she was saying, and that was before I even started playing any music. The other immediate thing was the enormous range of the bass. It's not too heavy and seems just right with my Zen on "Rock" setting, but it is deep. The mid-range is loud and...Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Good sound and noise isolation/blocking features, an improvement over the Creative 630's I have been using while traveling., November 17, 2011

I spend a lot of time on airplanes and am always looking for earphones that are above average in noise isolation. For long flights I carry Bose Noise Canceling head phones. For short flights I prefer something more compact. I compared these headphones on a recent trip to Pittsburgh vs. the Creative EP-630 In-Ear Noise-Isolating Headphones (Black), which have been my standard travel headphones. Here's how they stack up:

Neither product used noise cancellation technology; that's reserved for much higher priced items. They use the rubber ear buds to block sound from getting in to your ear canal. The 660 produces slightly better sound quality. The bass sounds are a bit deeper and I was able to hear some of the background voices and instruments that are sometimes harder to hear with the 630. For example, with classical music I was able...Read more
