Portable Stereo MP3/CD Player with AM/FM Tuner

Amazon.com Product Review

Take your favorite tunes on the road or to the park with this portable CD boombox. Sporting a unique, rounded chassis with silver highlights that's way more fashionable than standard boxy models, the MP-CD451 is an ideal choice for music fans who want a little extra style with their sounds. Fortunately for listeners, the cool shape doesn't detract from the music, as the CD player includes all the basics and a few extras. Among the features are CD-R/RW compatibility and standard skip, search, and repeat one and all functions. Listeners can also enjoy MP3s burned onto CDs, giving them access to a vast digital music library. And because each MP3-CD holds up to 10 hours of music, you can take a ton of music on the road without bringing along dozens of jewel cases. When the CDs are played out, listeners can turn to the AM/FM tuner for a less-structured playlist.

The MP-CD451 owes its audio performance to its 1-bit digital-to-analog converter, which ensures a clean CD sound, and its pair of wide-ranging side speakers. Rounding out the feature set is a 3.5 mm stereo headphone jack, a digital two-digit LED display, a telescoping FM antenna, and a flip-up carrying handle. The unit runs on either AC power or six C-size batteries (not included) and measures a compact 8.25 by 5.5 by 8.5 inches (W x H x D). And as with all Coby audio products, the MP-CD451 is backed by a 90-day warranty.

This CD player made a constant humming noise when plugged in. The noise was loud enough that you could also hear it over the music being played. I would not recommend this product.

I thought buying a cheap mp3 playing cd player would be pretty safe, since I wasn't looking for anything to listen to my high end stuff. Well 25 bucks sounded too good to be true. First thing I noticed was an unGodly hum that has no rhyme or reason. I never heard the name Coby before and hope to never hear its name or its hum again. (you get what you pay for)

Updating this 6 years later(would you believe) on 4-2-12: It's had sporadic use over this time period. It has a 3-way switch on the left hand side of unit: CD Player, Tuner, with Off in the middle. To play in the CD mode, you've got to jiggle the switch, play with a bit, to get it stable, so the CD player come on. I would say that a switch of this time is an accident waiting to happen - better - and probably more expensive for a company to make electronic switches for mode choice (as I have in a radio from Magnavox that is much older than this unit). But this unit still works. Antenna is a too short, still (and no, I didn't expect it grow during the last 6 years, and I do sometimes add a piece of wire to pull in the relatively weak local NPR station up here). This unit is still being made, and that the price has almost doubled to about $52, on Amazon, as of this writing. Now I return you, to my original review, from Feb., 2006), which still remains my view now.
