This review is from: Archos HDMI Mini Dock for Archos 5 (Black) (Electronics) We've been quite happy with our Archos 5 Internet Tablet for playing videos that we have previously transcoded. We have the battery dock that allows us to hook up the device to a TV via composite or S-video connections. It's been great while traveling as we have been able to watch movies on various hotel TVs.
We have an HD TV at home, so we thought it would be nice to hook the Archos up to the TV via HDMI like many of our other components. We purchased this dock to compliment the battery dock that we already have, and to use for when we are at home. When we first hooked it up, the video quality via the HDMI cable was quite impressive. But, as soon as we went to play a video, the show-stopper sound quality really grabbed our attention. It was distorted and clipped. We tried all sorts of tricks like lowering the device volume levels in case it was simply over-clipping the inputs. We could not get acceptable sound via the HDMI connection no matter what we did. We...Read more 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful: By Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Archos HDMI Mini Dock for Archos 5 (Black) (Electronics) I always read the reviews, and use those as ONE input into my purchasing decisions. In this case, the two posted reviews (prior to mine) seemed... well, unconvincing. So I went ahead and bought one of these. I've received it, tested it thoroughly, and I'm TOTALLY SATISFIED with mine.
I don't question that one of them MIGHT have been a "dud" out of the box. Virtually all electronics are done this way... the days of 100%, thorough, pre-shipment testing of electronic devices are long gone (sadly)... it's just cheaper to ship everything and replace the defective items in the field. I'm sure that they do testing on a sample, but some defective product inevitably will slip through. The only place you get 100% testing is on "people die if it fails" type hardware. Nobody dies if your HDMI dock doesn't work, do they? So... did you get Archos customer service to replace it? They're quite responsive (but you have to remember not to call during their lunch hour... or...Read more By Foxheart (New England) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Archos HDMI Mini Dock for Archos 5 (Black) (Electronics) I purchased this to go with my Archos 5 500gb Internet tablet fully expecting to be able to view videos from my tablet on my TV. Well, I hooked everything up and experienced my first disappointment. I could barely navigate the Archos touchscreen when it was sitting in the mini-dock. Apparently the touch capacity goes all to hell when the Archos is docked so it took many tries to get to my movies via the touchscreen. Also there is no included remote of any kind so you have to use the faulty touchscreen if you want to navigate to your stored video files. Let me point out that the touch screen works beautifully for me when the Archos is NOT in the mini-dock.My second disappointment came with the video output itself. When I (finally) got a video to play on my TV it played in a tiny box in the center of the screen with huge black margins so that if you wanted to actually watch the darn video you'd have to be about two feet away from the screen. I tried fiddling with the...Read more |
