I just got this device, used it for less than an hour, and it has already stopped working.
When I first tried to access the AppsLib, it crashed and wouldn't reopen. The Archos 48 came with firmware version 1.9.21 (Android 1.6) installed, and once I connected to my WIFI, it notified me that a version 2 firmware was available. I updated it from the device itself, but after it said that "Update OK. Device will now restart to finalize the update.", it restarted -- but it would NOT get pass the "Archos Entertainment your way" boot-up screen (I've waited a good 10 minutes).
I tried resetting the device (both holding the on/off button for 10 seconds and also the pinhole reset button), but still had the same problem of not getting past the boot screen.

This is the first time I've had something like this and I do have to say I'm not impressed. Guess I'm just a bit too much old school as I don't think we need as many play toys in our lives like these. I do have to say however that it does have a ton of storage space and downloading music is ultra fast. Played solitare on this also and it seems to be good for playing games such as that but not sure about any of the action games since they are not my style.
Let's do this the easy way:
Things I liked about this;
1. large storage space
2. ultra fast downloading
3. great for simple mindless games such as cards
4. great color for photos and the clarity is wonderful
5. hooked up my wifi with no problems thank goodness and it has a longer range of reception (my daughter told me about the longer range)
Things I didn't like about this;
1. you have to keep calibrating it in order for it to work properly

Simple purchase for me. I wanted something big enough to hold my entire mp3 library and this is the only thing out there that will do it. I abhor Apple. This will replace my trusty Zen Vision:M 60Gb. Received unit, updated firmware and everything seemed OK. Touch calibration and accelerometer are a little wonky but they are decent. After a little searching, I've got access to Android Market and already have Angry Birds running on the device. Time will tell on reliability, but my initial impressions are good. You'll need to buy a charger, as USB takes forever to charge. I love that I can run Linux on this if I want. Firmware changes are easy (I've done a couple now). I still have to load my library on this, but I'm loving the screen and Android apps so far. For $199, it is a steal. Amazon credited me $60 for the difference of my purchase price when they dropped to $199, which is why I keep buying stuff here.
