Summary: Amazing price for a player supporting so many codecs 2008-07-19
Comment: Hi!

Bought two of these for the kids along with a dual USB car charger. OK, it is far from an iPod, especially the UI and the feeling of quality. But it quickly plays all the DVDs I ripped for my kids and works nicely for long trips. If it breaks, well, 119 USD is not the end of the world. I have no time to convert all of my media for a single format device.

Support is also good. I called them about a unit I thought was bricked on delivery. I just got an error 102 "recovery mode". The nice support staff simply told me to hold the power and tv buttons down and copy the new firmware manually and everything worked. I was worried it was corrupt memory, but it was simply crappy software.

Summary: Great Player...Great Price 2008-03-19
Comment: First, I bought the 405 because I did not want to fool around with a hard drive (the 405 has a 2GB internal flash drive and an SD slot for adding memory) and I did not want to fool around with wifi. Hard drives that get moved around alot break and wifi for small devices tends to be unreliable.

That said, so far (one week) I'm very satisfied with this player. The screen (3.5") is easy to read. I use Microsoft Explorer to click-and-drag music files (whole albums and individual songs) onto the flash drive. You can sync with Windows Media Player, but it seems like an unnecessary hassle.

I understand the complaints of the other reviewers. The advertised DVR should work. But, unfortunately, the more complicated inexpensive electronics get the more likely they'll disappoint.

I also bought the mini dock...it allows you to plug the thing into the wall outlet to charge, you can hook up an external portable hard drive to hold more files, and you can patch out the picture on the screen to your tv.

For $129 and another $29 for the dock I'm very happy. I haven't downloaded any video files and don't know if I will. The ones they included (dumb unit info) play fine.

By the way, I posted a similar review a few days ago. I found out later that it wasn't posted because I wrote where to find SDHC cards cheap.

Summary: Not quite ready for prime time 2008-03-01
Comment: The Archos 405 has a good screen, and it's a pleasure to watch. I was frustrated by many things about it though:
-it's very picky about SD cards and didn't like either of the two I already owned. This is well documented in the Archos forum
-both transferring files and charging by the USB cable seemed very slow. I left it plugged in overnight and it still wasn't fully charged the next morning.
-It wouldn't play any of the videos I'd ripped for my iPod without an extra cost plug in
-It doesn't have a hold button, which is a necessity if you want young children to use it while traveling (which is mainly what I bought it for)

My Creative Zen is better in every way, except for the size of the screen, and was half the price. I'll stick with the Zen until something better comes along.

Summary: Good but you could hope for more 2008-02-09
Comment: I bought this Archos for my mother, since Ive owned 5 archos (3 models and 2 dead) but I have had good experience with returned archos... (actually with the ones sent back)...

Anyway it is really good mp3 player, pretty good movie and video player but I like the controls on my av500 better (besides the fact that im used to it, it is actually faster to get things done with menus and stuff)... Knowing this was a flash drive I thought the battery would hve been improve from the 4th generation of this model... but i was wrong... i actually think they put a smaller (mAh) battery... Cause even after many cycles my mom havent got near to the claimed 16 hours for mp3 (that is about 12 hours of normal usage) or 5 hours for video (yet to be tested) anyway... she gets more like 8 hours... and the charging time is really bad...

Im waiting for the mini dock to arrive so she can charge it directly to the wall... and to see if the battery improve...

Great set of features that is: sdhc compatibility, mini usb standard plug and capability to record with additional dock.. but i wish they would have let the other details that makes my av500 special (built in speaker, voice/line in recorder, removable battery, video out directly from the headphone plug)
